.O''NEILL'S LEINSTER FOOTBALL LEAGUE
Liffey Valley Rangers FC 2 Newtown United FC 2
Derek Doyle x2 Luke Martin x 2
What consists of a classic game of soccer, Good football? Goals?, goal-line clearances?, world class saves?, extra time nerves?, penalty saves?, penalty misses?. Some might say any of this list. Well the Leinster Football League Development Cup Final in Bluebell FC Ground on Friday the 11th May included all of these.
Played before a huge support of Newtown United who made the M50 trip up to the Nass road venue and the huge Liffey Valley Rangers FC support that made their way from Clondalkin.
The officials walked both teams out to a cheer that could be heard from a long distance away and we knew it was going to be a nervous start for both these young clubs.
Credit to both clubs right from the start as they participated in the traditional FIFA fair play handshake and we knew that football was going to be a winner.
Newtown United started very brightly and seemed to take advantage of the early Rangers nerves. Through the guidance of Ritchie Dalton and Dave Moran they quickly went 1 up thanks to a Luke Martin strike. United wearing a new colour yellow kept up the pressure and were rewarded after a nice passing move seen the superb Luke Martin add another goal to his already impressive season. Most young players would have maybe dropped the head after going 2-0 in the early stages of a first half, not Mark Costigans Rangers. They dug deep and encouraged each other until they cut the deficit in half with a strike from Derek? Doyler? Doyle to send both these sides into the dressing room at half time and leave the crowd waiting for more..
Hair dryer moments maybe in the Rangers dressing room from manager Costigan as Liffey Valley came out in the second half more confident and with a new plan of attack. They were rewarded with another wonderful strike from Doyler to put both sides level.
The Valley then put tremendous pressure on the Newtown Defence and only for 2 excellent saves from Ian Farrell the spectacular looking trophy would have been on its way to clondalkin.
Cosstigans men continued to put pressure on Farrell?s back 4 and when Craig Rahen beat the offside trap and lobbed the ball over the advancing Newtown keeper, cheers started to ring out around the ground, however the cheers soon died down as Ethan Gannon amazingly cleared the ball off the line, just as the referee was about to blow the whistle.
Extra time could not separate these sides as both managers cancelled each other out and we faced the dreaded penalty shoot out. Both clubs missed chances to claim the trophy and luck went against a very brave and young Liffey Valley side, who I think we will hear a lot about in the near future.
After the LFL representative Mr Derek Collins, thanked the officials Mr Ben Connolly, Mr Tom Dempsey and Mr Dave Thompson, both teams and supporters the Trophy made its way to the hands of the newtown Captain Sean Hefferan who raised it to the cheers of the delighted Newtown United supporters.
